3. Strain Localization and Instability in Geomechanics: Application to Seismic slip

Lecturer

Jean Sulem

Content

Strain localization zones in the form of shear bands or compaction bands in geomaterials are observed across scales from sub-millimetric (grain size) to kilometric scale (geological structures). The purpose of the lecture is to provide the basic tools of strain localization and stability analysis for applications in Geomechanics. Special emphasis will be made on the effects of temperature, pore-pressure and chemical reactions in relation with seismic slip and compaction banding.
