Antonio Gens

Antonio Gens is professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the Technical University of Catalonia in Barcelona where he has been Head of the Department of Geotechnical Engineering and Geosciences and member of the Governing Council of the University. He has been involved in geotechnical research, consulting and education for more than 30 years and he is the author or co-author of more than 300 scientific papers. He has been involved in projects of deep geological disposal of nuclear waste for the last two decades.

He has received numerous awards such as the ICE Telford Medal (twice), the George Stephenson Medal (twice) and the Honour Medal of the Institution of Civil Engineers in Spain. In 2007, he delivered the 47th Rankine Lecture. He is a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering and Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Grenoble. He was Vice-President for Europe of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) for the period 2013-2017.  The ISSMGE awarded him the Kevin Nash Gold Medal in 2017.
